Tips For Picking Out Products For Low Porosity Hair

Tips For Picking Out Products For Low Porosity Hair

Knowing your hair’s porosity is important when it comes to finding which products work best for it. Porosity is your hair’s ability to hold and retain moisture and is defined by three levels: low, medium, and high. Click here to learn more about porosity.

Tips for low porosity hair

When your hair has low porosity it means that your cuticles are sealed down, making it very hard for moisture to come in. Our advice, deep conditioning with heat! Typically adding heat to hair is rarely a recommendation, especially when talking about moisture. But, because heat lifts the hair's cuticle, it may be beneficial to low porosity hair to allow deep moisture to penetrate the cuticle.

An example of this would be to use a hood heat cap or blow dryer when deep conditioning.

If you would rather stay away from heat tools, try washing and conditioning your hair with hot water. Typically you want to rinse conditioner with cool to warm water to seal the cuticles down but try it without that step if you have low porosity hair.

Picking products for low porosity hair

Since the low porosity hair cuticles are sealed down, the hair can experience product buildup much easier than those with medium or high porosity. When picking products, you want to look for options that will not weigh the hair down. Keeping in mind that too many products in your routine could contribute to that buildup. If you find a regimen works, there is no need to layer on a haircare cocktail just because you think you should have more steps. Also, because of product buildup, look for products that can remove dirt & grime from your scalp without stripping away your natural oils.

  • Apply products to damp, not soaking wet hair
  • Do not layer a ton of products
  • Use lightweight products
  • Look for products with: Coconut Oil, Baobab Oil, Patauá Oil, Shea Esters, Argan Oil, Almond Oil, Grape Seed Oil
